There are heroes all across the 5th District.  Not all who served are war heroes but all men and women who have served their country are heroes.  Thank you veteran, for your service to America. 

DAVIS, HERMAN
Distinguished Service Cross, WWI

In bronze on front of monument in Manila, AR under statue -- Herman Davis, Pvt, Co I, 113th Inf., Sharpshooter and Company Runner. Enlisted March 14, 1918; Honorably discharged May 29th 1919. Cited for bravery for extraordinary heroism in action and decorated with:

US Distinguished Service Cross:  October  10, 1918;    French Croix De Guerre with Palm:  April 19, 1919; Gilt Star for Croix De Guerre: April 23rd, 1919;  French Medaille Militaire: May 10th, 1919.

A most courageous runner who single-handed attacked a machine gun nest which was preventing the advance of his platoon and killed the four gunners. “The smallest but bravest and best liked man in my company.” His Captain.

Engraved in the stone on the backside of the monument:  Erected by the people of Mississippi County in grateful memory of their hero: Herman Davis, Born January 23, 1888, Died January 5th, 1923.  He gave his life upon the alter of his country.
